Indymedia.us and the EFF successfully fight back against bogus FBI subpoena

Indymedia.us is happy to announce that we've managed, after nearly a year of legal action on our behalf by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), to successfully fight back against a bogus subpoena request issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in conjunction with a grand jury investigation. The request demanded we turn over all IP address logs for a day in June of 2008 - not only did Indymedia.us object to this blatantly illegitimate and overly broad request, but, per accepted Indymedia best practices, we do not keep such logs in the first place, in order to maximally ensure the privacy of our site users. Also troubling was the fact that the indymedia.us sysadmin who received the subpoena was also bound by its gag order provision, making her unable to discuss the legal issue with the broader network of collectives cooperating on the indymedia.us site. We're happy that the EFF was ultimately able to get this demand for silence shown to be illegitimate as well --- one can only wonder how many ISPs silently capitulate to similarly broad and unconstitutional requests.

G20 Finance Ministers fail to agree on Climate Change Finance Package

G20 Finance ministers failed to reach agreement on the financing required for a global agreement to stave off catastrophic climate change, according to WWF Scotland. The Finance Ministers of the G20 countries were meeting in St Andrews, Scotland on 6-7 November.

Outside the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in St Andrews students and civil society gathered with an alternative summit on Saturday and Students Blockading the G20 meeting on the road to the Fairmont Hotel in an attempt to disrupt the G20 finance ministers as they arrived at their St Andrews hotel location. A rally occured in St Andrews to say 'Nae Tae G20.' on November 7. (Photos) The students were protesting against the G20's current policies regarding the economic recession.

Africa abandons Barcelona's pre COP15 climate talks - Anger in the streets at rich nations inaction. Copenhagen Climate Treaty appears doomed - delays likely. Delay is not an option, delay kills.

This week (Nov 2 - 6) the Barcelona International Climate Change Talks are happening, five days of formal negotiations, in the lead up to COP 15 in Copenhagen in December 2009. Already Barcelona has seen a Manifestation in Barcelona streets - "The climate is not for sale" (Youtube vid | report), Outdoor film screening in city streets of Age of Stupid, TckTckTck wake up call for climate talks, Greenpeace banner drop (Youtube), Anarchist night greeting, Africa boycott U.N. climate talks (Grist report), Evening Water Lobby group targeted, and the Main entrance shut down by activists.

Conservation organisations have warned that the Copenhagen climate treaty threatens to subsidise the destruction of the world's remaining rainforests instead of financing their protection. In Indonesia Greenpeace established a Climate Defenders Camp to preserve Rainforest peatlands (Youtube Video). On October 24, 2009 people in 181 countries came together through 350.org calling for carbon emissions to be capped at 350ppm. It was the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history, at over 5200 events around the world, many of them reported on the Indymedia Network. (Photos)

Opposition to EDL Rally in Leeds, UK

On 31st October 2009 in City Square, Leeds, the English Defence League held a rally. The EDL is a nationalist, islamophobic organisation formed earlier this year and is widely viewed as racist.

A counter-demonstration was organised by Unite Against Fascism (UAF). Participants described it variously as being dull, jubilant and tightly controlled. Meanwhile, other anti-EDL groups attempted to confront EDL directly. Reports suggest that at least two large groups attempted to reach EDL to confront them at City Square, but were turned back towards the UAF rally by police (see time-line for first-hand accounts).

Reports from the area around City Square were that most of the EDL supporters didn't go into their pen. Some were held between police lines and others regrouped on Boar Lane, before being brought back to the railway station by the police. Another group of EDL marched around the Albion Street area and responded violently when challenged about their inflammatory chanting.

Bevorstehendes Hausbestzungsverbot in den Niederlaenden

Seit drei Jahren wird in der niderlaendischen Politik ueber ein Hausbesetzungsverbot diskutiert. Am 15. Oktober genehmigte das Parlament ein Gesetz, das die Hausbestzung zur schweren Straftat macht. Das Inbesitznehmen von Haeusern, die seit ueber einem Jahr leer stehen, ist zum heutigen Zeitpunkt dort noch legal. Die neue Rechtshandlung geht auf eine Initiative der Christdemokraten, der Christen Union (CU), und der konservativen Oppositionspartei VVD zurueck . Diese Rechtshandlung soll die Hausbesetzung zur Straftat machen, wobei eine Raeumungsverweigerung mit einer 1-3 jaehrigen Verhaftung bestraft werden kann. Trotz starker Kritik des Obersten Gerichtshofs, einer Union von Stadtparlamenten und der Amsterdamer Polizei wird das Gesetz von der christlichen/rechtsstehenden Mehrheit des Haages durchgebracht.

El pasado 12 de octubre se consumó lo que, desde hace tiempo denunciamos como parte de la estrategia etnofágica y etnocida del actual Estado-gobierno venezolano: el cuerpo ministerial de Chávez vino a entregar supuestos títulos a tres comunidades indígenas yukpa en la Sierra de Perijá, pretendiendo con ello, dar por saldado el proceso de demarcación de los hábitats correspondientes a este pueblo. Llama la atención la no presencia del Presidente Chávez en un acto esperado en la Sierra desde el año 2002, fecha en la que según disposición constitucional el Estado ha debido culminar el proceso de demarcación de todos los espacios territoriales indígenas del país; en su defecto, un enorme piquete de soldados cubrió el espacio del evento, supuestamente, para brindar seguridad a los Ministros (Interior y Justicia; Ambiente; de Pueblos Indígenas; entre otros funcionarios presentes), y que al menor asomo de protesta de las comunidades no favorecidas se activó de inmediato para aplacar sus abiertos reclamos. Se trató, en fin, de la acción a través de la cual los yukpa debían obligadamente aceptar la entrega de NADA.

Más de 150,000 personas marcharon el día del Paro Nacional contra las políticas neoliberales del gobierno de Luis Fortuño y los ricos. Hoy por hoy el país se prepara para organizar la Huelga General.

Como parte de las actividades programadas para el día del Paro Nacional del 15 de octubre, hubo dos grandes concentraciones: la de la coalición Todo Puerto Rico Por Puerto Rico comandada por el liderato de la Coalición Sindical compuesta de sucursales de uniones burocráticas estadounidenses, y la del Frente Amplio de Solidaridad y Lucha comandado por la UTIER. Pero en el Expreso Las Américas, en el área del elevado que pasa por encima de la Ave. Roosevelt, se dio una tercera concentración de manera improvisada.

Costa Rica: Protestzug für die Würde des Südens

Am vergangenen 6. Oktober, zwei Jahre nach dem Wahlbetrug, der den Beitritt Costa Ricas zum Freihandelsabkommen mit den USA besiegelte, fand ein öffentlicher Marsch für die Würde des Südens im Süden Costa Ricas statt. Mehr als 150 AktivistInnen marschierten vom Eingang der indigenen Gemeinde Térraba bis zum Zentrum des Kantons Buenos Aires. Schritt für Schritt brachte der Protestzug die 13 km hinter sich.  Unterschiedliche Gruppierungen im Süden Costa Ricas sehen sich mit verschiedensten Bedrohungen konfrontiert.

Barackenbewohner in Südafrika gewaltsam angegriffen

DURBAN —Am Samstag den 26. September stürmten rund 40 schwer bewaffnete Männer ein Treffen des Kennedy Road Development Committees der Abahlali baseMjondolo, der Bewegung von Barackenbewohnern in Südafrika. Die Männer sollen gerufen haben: “Die AmaMpondo übernehmen Kennedy. Kennedy gehört den amaZulu!” Die darauf folgende Gewalt führte zu 2-8 Todesfällen und hunderte Baracken brannten. Samstagnacht wurden nur Leiter der Abahlali baseMjondolo verhaftet --- viele davon sind Mitglieder des Sicherheitsteams der Bewegung und einige Jugendliche, die zum Zeitpunkt des Angriffs gar nicht anwesend waren. Viele flüchteten aus der Siedlung und es wurden die Bleiben vieler Menschen zerstört, einschließlich des Hauses des Abahlali Präsidenten, S'bu Zikode.

Klar ist, dass der Angriff politische und ethnische Gründe hatte und es gibt die Befürchtung, dass hiesige Behörden, wie Polizei, ANC und der Bezirksrat involviert waren. Die Gewalt scheint von langer Hand geplant gewesen zu sein, um diese friedliche und demokratische Bewegung zu brechen. Bitte lest und unterschreibt eine Petition zur Beendigung der Gewalt.

Massiver Widerstand - Micheletti Diktatur lässt die Todesschwadron von 1980 wieder aufleben

Die Micheletti Diktatur in Honduras, in der auch Todesschwadron-Mitglieder der "Battalione 3-16" [1] [2], Billy Joya [1] [2], Nelson Willy Mejía Mejía [1] [2] und Napoleón Nassar Herrera [1] [2] etwas zu sagen haben, haben seit dem Staatsstreich am 28. Juni 2009 Menschenrechte ausgehebelt, mindestens drei Menschen “verschwinden lassen”, fast zehn Personen außergerichtlich hinrichten lassen und Hunderte Menschen inhaftiert [1] (es) | [2] (en) (es) | [3] (en) (es). Trotz allem haben Proteste nie zuvor gesehenen Ausmaßes stattgefunden, die am 11. August 2009 mit der Ankunft von über 70.000 (es) Demonstranten und Tausender anderer in San Pedro Sula gipfelten. Koordiniert wurden diese Massenproteste von der Front gegen den Staatsstreich. Im 19. Kommuniqué der Front steht zu lesen: sollte das Micheletti Regime nicht in den nächsten Tagen zurücktreten und Zelayas Präsidentschaft wiederhergestellt sein, werde die Front die Aktionen des Zivilen Ungehorsams ausweiten (es), die die Wirtschaft bereits gelähmt haben und nationale und internationale Strafprozesse gegen die Verantwortlichen der außergerichtlichen Hinrichtungen und anderer Menschrechtsverstöße beantragen.

Die westliche Presse hat mit wenigen Ausnahmen kaum über die Beteiligung der Todesschwadron-Mitglieder in Michelettis De Facto Regierung berichtet. Auch nicht über die “Verschwindungen”. Sie haben die Zahlen der außergerichtlichen Hinrichtungen untertrieben und die fragwürdigen Zusammenhänge mit der Todesschwadron von 1980 fast vollständig ausgeblendet. In der Zelaya Regierung arbeiteten ebenso Todesschwadron-Mitglieder (es), gegen die von CODEH und anderen honduranischen Menschenrechtsorganisationen Einspruch erhoben wurde. Der von Obama, Clinton und Lula "Arias" Plan erwähnt absichtlich nicht, ob Todesschwadron-Mitglieder aus Koalitionsregierungen ausgeschlossen werden sollen, oder nicht.
