The Third Summit of Governments and Heads of State of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union (ALCUE III) concluded with a smooth and indirect condemnation of the American military torture in Iraq, trade agreements without popular endorsement, violence against demonstrators at the end of the general march and around 100 detained and disappeared. 30 were hurt during the previous night, which was passed in a tense atmosphere.

Report from the Guadalajara Mobilization

According to the latest information from this morning, several demonstrators were released. Nonetheless nearly 70 people are still imprisoned. At a noon press conference today, rumors were confirmed concerning the torutre and humiliation of the prisoners, descriptions of beatings along the way, insults, etc. Upon arrival the men were separated from the women. The women were made to strip completely, were forced into strange positions, and were told to open and close the door each time. They were detained for more than three hours on the ground with their arms on their necks while being kicked and jumped upon. From the inside some of the prisoners overheard someone saying that the foreigners should be released as quickly as possible so as to not create problems with the embassies.



This was denounced by one of the prisoners, an inhabitant of Guadalajara, who was standing in a bus stop with her parents and a reporter from some organization, after participating in the mobilization. Apparently some of the inhabitants of Guadalajara have been released since three in the morning (according to official data) and still nothing is known about those gone missing, which gives a sign of revenge and hatred from the authority for any one of us.



The NGOs and the Unions denied everything.



Of the wounded, it is known that nine have already left the hospital, and two have ruptured intestines and head legions.



In the negotiations, the authorities--which have not yet given a lits of detainees--have asked the demonstrators to evacuate the city immediately, to not hold any more demonstrations, and to make payment all of the damages to banks and commerce. It is urgent to spead this information and hold demonstrations to demand the release of the prisoners--of whom it is rumored that between 9 and 15 will have serious criminal charges brought upon them. From the Independent Media Center (CMI-Guadalajara) an official notice has been sent to different local, national and international media centers to put pressure and accelerate the resolution of the detentions. A PayPal account has been created to receive donations for the legal costs of the detainees.
