Coverage of Haiti Solidarity Efforts

February 2, New York City: A delegation from the December 12th Movement and the Friday Haiti Relief Coalition departed from Kennedy Airport destined for Haiti on Monday morning. In the wake of the tremendous earthquake that shook the island nation, Black people throughout New York came together to begin their contribution to the relief process. January 26, Houston: Sister Mawiyah was in Haiti when the earthquake hit on January 12. She has been doing missionary work there for the last 23 years and made it her home for the last five years. The name of her organization is Haitian American Ministries. Bro. Kofi had been notifying us that she was missing during the earthquake and was not responding. But around 2:00am on the morning of January 14, he received a text message from her that confirmed she was alive in the midst of thousands being found dead. January 23, Los Angeles: Despite the heavy rain, 24 people took part in an emergency vigil for Haiti at the Downtown Federal Building, Thursday eve, Jan 21. The vigil's purpose was asking people "to donate money to go to grassroots women and their families, and therefore communities, rather than to thieving elites and their corrupt NGOs." Violencia creciente contra activistas antiminas

El 26 de diciembre, Dora Alicia Recinos Soto se convirtió en la tercera vícitma de una ola de violencia contra activistas por el medio ambiente en la región de Cabañas, en el Salvador, donde losm iembros de la comunidad están protestan contra la reapertura de una mina de oro de la compañia Canadiense Pacific Rim.

Dora Alicia era miembro del Comité Ambiental de Cabañas, y se había opuesto activamente a la mna. Tenía ocho meses de embarazo cuando la asesinaron, y su hijo de dos años también resultó herido en el ataque.

Su asesinato viene seis días despues del tiroteo fatal que recibió Ramiro Rivera Gómez, Vicepresidente del Comité Ambiental de Cabañas, quién había ya sobrevivdo ocho tiros en agosto de este año. En junio, otro ecologista, Gustavao Rivera Moreno, había sido torturado y asesinado. Muchos otros miembros de la comunidad han recibido amenazas de muerte, incluyendo jóvenes trabajadores y periodistas de la estación de radio comunitaria Radio Victoria, y el presbítero local, el padre Luis Quintanilla, quién apenas escapó de un intento de secuestro.

Radio Ñomndaa festeja su V Aniversario: la Palabra del Agua fluye en la música, lazos solidarios y nuevas propuestas

El pasado 20 de diciembre, Radio Ñomndaa, la Palabra del Agua, cumplió cinco años de vida. Es la primera radio comunitaria en el estado de Guerrero y la única en el idioma Ñomndaa. Se escucha por miles de personas de las comunidades amuzgas, y para muchas de ellas, es la primera vez en su vida que han podido escuchar música y noticias en su propio idioma. Desde el principio, Radio Ñomndaa ha estado bajo ataque del gobierno federal, estatal y especialmente el gobierno municipal de una cacique poderosa. Estas agresiones incluyen golpizas, detenciones y el ingreso a las instalaciones de la policía militar de la Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (AFI). Huelga en Hoteles es Inminente en Puerto Rico

Los trabajadores de los hoteles en Puerto Rico están preparados para irse a la huelga en tres hoteles: el Hotel Conrad Condado Plaza Hilton, el Hotel Caribe Hilton, y el Hotel y Casino de El San Juan Hilton.

Aunque se espera que las negociaciones entre los trabajadores y Hilton Corporation continúen, se considera que la huelga es inminente. Puede haber interrupciones significativas en la mayoría de los servicios debido a que la huelga puede incluir a más de 1,100 empleados, que incluyen los empleados de housekeeping, los restaurantes, la cocina, los bares, el servicio a las habitaciones, los banquetes, recepción, el personal de porteros y botones, las piscinas, los teléfonos, mantenimiento, los croupiers y los cajeros de máquinas tragamonedas. Todas las playas de Puerto Rico, por ley, son accesibles al público y, mientras dure la huelga, las playas anexas a los hoteles estará ocupadas por los trabajadores en huelga y cientos de sus amistades y seguidores. 100,000 march for System Change not climate change in Copenhagen with mass arrests

Global UN Climate negotiations (COP15) are proceeding in Copenhagen with over 100 heads of state expected to attend in the next week. With 2009 the 5th hottest year on record, Scientists are saying a Climate Treaty is more urgent with Global carbon emissions still increasing and acidification threatening marine biodiversity.

There are major differences between the industrialised nations, the large developing nations of India and China, and the poorest and most vulnerable countries as typified by Tuvalu which proposed to fortify the Kyoto agreement, and Bolivia. In Copenhagen 100,000 people marched, however after 3pm police charged into the march and made arbitrary mass arrests estimated to be about 1,000. Further protests are occurring the next week inside the conference center and on the streets, check Denmark Indymedia for details and reports.

Many thousands of people attended a global weekend of vigils organised by 350.org and other protests with Walk Against Warming In Australia attracting 90,000 people, with 40,000 attending a Melbourne rally. (Video)

Conferencia sobre el cambio climático de la ONU: Cambiar el sistema, no el clima

La Conferencia sobre el cambio climático de la ONU Cop15 tendrá lugar en Copenhague del 7 al 18 de diciembre. Está anunciada como la última oportunidad para salvar nuestro futuro, pero en realidad ¿es de extrañar que la gente se enfade ante la ignorancia y las promesas vacías de l@s polític@s? La campaña 350.org del pasado octubre representó claramente el deseo de miles de personas por que se reduzcan las emisiones a nivel mundial. La movilización en todo el mundo ha sido enorme, pero se sigue temiendo que las élites políticas ignoren una vez más las peticiones de la población, como sucedió con las protestas contra la guerra de Irak en 2003. No se trata solamente de la reducción de gases de efecto invernadero. En el Sur global es donde más se sufren las consecuencias del cambio climático, aunque allí poco se haya contribuído a agravar el problema. Cada vez más activistas climátic@s opinan que no podemos confiarnos a los mercados en el futuro y que las 'falsas soluciones' del capitalismo verde no son más que mentiras.

Indymedia.us and the EFF successfully fight back against bogus FBI subpoena

Indymedia.us is happy to announce that we've managed, after nearly a year of legal action on our behalf by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), to successfully fight back against a bogus subpoena request issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in conjunction with a grand jury investigation. The request demanded we turn over all IP address logs for a day in June of 2008 - not only did Indymedia.us object to this blatantly illegitimate and overly broad request, but, per accepted Indymedia best practices, we do not keep such logs in the first place, in order to maximally ensure the privacy of our site users. Also troubling was the fact that the indymedia.us sysadmin who received the subpoena was also bound by its gag order provision, making her unable to discuss the legal issue with the broader network of collectives cooperating on the indymedia.us site. We're happy that the EFF was ultimately able to get this demand for silence shown to be illegitimate as well --- one can only wonder how many ISPs silently capitulate to similarly broad and unconstitutional requests.

G20 Finance Ministers fail to agree on Climate Change Finance Package

G20 Finance ministers failed to reach agreement on the financing required for a global agreement to stave off catastrophic climate change, according to WWF Scotland. The Finance Ministers of the G20 countries were meeting in St Andrews, Scotland on 6-7 November.

Outside the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in St Andrews students and civil society gathered with an alternative summit on Saturday and Students Blockading the G20 meeting on the road to the Fairmont Hotel in an attempt to disrupt the G20 finance ministers as they arrived at their St Andrews hotel location. A rally occured in St Andrews to say 'Nae Tae G20.' on November 7. (Photos) The students were protesting against the G20's current policies regarding the economic recession.

Industrialised World Intransigence on CO2 emissions dooms Climate Negotiations

Africa abandons Barcelona's pre COP15 climate talks - Anger in the streets at rich nations inaction. Copenhagen Climate Treaty appears doomed - delays likely. Delay is not an option, delay kills.

This week (Nov 2 - 6) the Barcelona International Climate Change Talks are happening, five days of formal negotiations, in the lead up to COP 15 in Copenhagen in December 2009. Already Barcelona has seen a Manifestation in Barcelona streets - "The climate is not for sale" (Youtube vid | report), Outdoor film screening in city streets of Age of Stupid, TckTckTck wake up call for climate talks, Greenpeace banner drop (Youtube), Anarchist night greeting, Africa boycott U.N. climate talks (Grist report), Evening Water Lobby group targeted, and the Main entrance shut down by activists.

Conservation organisations have warned that the Copenhagen climate treaty threatens to subsidise the destruction of the world's remaining rainforests instead of financing their protection. In Indonesia Greenpeace established a Climate Defenders Camp to preserve Rainforest peatlands (Youtube Video). On October 24, 2009 people in 181 countries came together through 350.org calling for carbon emissions to be capped at 350ppm. It was the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history, at over 5200 events around the world, many of them reported on the Indymedia Network. (Photos)

Opposition to EDL Rally in Leeds, UK

On 31st October 2009 in City Square, Leeds, the English Defence League held a rally. The EDL is a nationalist, islamophobic organisation formed earlier this year and is widely viewed as racist.

A counter-demonstration was organised by Unite Against Fascism (UAF). Participants described it variously as being dull, jubilant and tightly controlled. Meanwhile, other anti-EDL groups attempted to confront EDL directly. Reports suggest that at least two large groups attempted to reach EDL to confront them at City Square, but were turned back towards the UAF rally by police (see time-line for first-hand accounts).

Reports from the area around City Square were that most of the EDL supporters didn't go into their pen. Some were held between police lines and others regrouped on Boar Lane, before being brought back to the railway station by the police. Another group of EDL marched around the Albion Street area and responded violently when challenged about their inflammatory chanting.
