Guadalajara - Urgent

Call to global action day 4th of June 2004: [ espanol ] [ english ] [ deutsch ] [ francais ] [ italiano ]

Updates: June 3: Yet more arrests La Jornada reported today [en] (6/3) that seven more activists have been arrested. It is unclear whether this number includes, or is in addition to, the three arrests reported above.

guadalajara.mediosindependientes.org/ June 2: More Arrests At least 3 more arrests have been confirmed in the last hours. These occured during a peaceful protest that began at 4:00 today in the plaza Governmental of Guadalajara. Soon after the first reports of the arrests, police parked and dismounted a truck in the corner in from on the Independent Media Center, blocking traffic and interrorgating bystanders. Unconfirmed reports have also been recieved that police have recieved orders for the arrests of members of the Centro de Medios Independientes.

1st June:

31st May:

  • 6 demonstrators from Monterrey were tranfered to Puente Grande penitentiary.

30 May, 1pm:

  • 30-40 remain in prison. 10 were released yesterday evening during the protest in front of the prison.
  • 8 foreigners were taken by immigrant athorities to Mexico City, where they face deportation. The situation of 3 foreigners is unknown. Police have released a list of 44 detained people; most are charged with property destruction and rioting, and could face prison sentences.

First feature posted on Indymedia.org, from Guadalajara-IMC: The Third Summit of Governments and Heads of State of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union (ALCUE III) concluded with a smooth and indirect condemnation of the American military torture in Iraq, trade agreements without popular endorsement, violence against demonstrators at the end of the general march and around 100 detained and disappeared. 30 were hurt during the previous night, which was passed in a tense atmosphere.

Report from the Guadalajara Mobilization According to the latest information from this morning, several demonstrators were released. Nonetheless nearly 70 people are still imprisoned. At a noon press conference today, rumors were confirmed concerning the torutre and humiliation of the prisoners, descriptions of beatings along the way, insults, etc. Upon arrival the men were separated from the women. The women were made to strip completely, were forced into strange positions, and were told to open and close the door each time. They were detained for more than three hours on the ground with their arms on their necks while being kicked and jumped upon. From the inside some of the prisoners overheard someone saying that the foreigners should be released as quickly as possible so as to not create problems with the embassies.

This was denounced by one of the prisoners, an inhabitant of Guadalajara, who was standing in a bus stop with her parents and a reporter from some organization, after participating in the mobilization. Apparently some of the inhabitants of Guadalajara have been released since three in the morning (according to official data) and still nothing is known about those gone missing, which gives a sign of revenge and hatred from the authority for any one of us.

The NGOs and the Unions denied everything.

Of the wounded, it is known that nine have already left the hospital, and two have ruptured intestines and head legions.

In the negotiations, the authorities--which have not yet given a lits of detainees--have asked the demonstrators to evacuate the city immediately, to not hold any more demonstrations, and to make payment all of the damages to banks and commerce. It is urgent to spead this information and hold demonstrations to demand the release of the prisoners--of whom it is rumored that between 9 and 15 will have serious criminal charges brought upon them. From the Independent Media Center (CMI-Guadalajara) an official notice has been sent to different local, national and international media centers to put pressure and accelerate the resolution of the detentions. A PayPal account has been created to receive donations for the legal costs of the detainees.

This article is the first time I've heard of the incident. Can you point us to previous IMC articles, or tell us what happened? This is vague. Sorry if I missed something.

BOLIVARIAN ALERT: FRIDAY JUNE 4 GLOBAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH PRISONERS OF

Calle y Media collective 02.Jun.2004 18:42

BOLIVARIAN ALERT: FRIDAY JUNE 4 GLOBAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH PRISONERS OF
GUADALAJARA. TO THE MEXICAN CONSULATES!

Bolivarian Companer@s of the continent,
I am writing because our Mexican comrades who were protesting in
Guadalajara against the E.U.-Latin America summit have been brutally
repressed and taken prisoners (almost 100 arrests). The abuses go from
extreme physical violence to sexual harrasment and psychological
intimidation. At any rate, they are in urgent need of monetary assistance
and active solidarity and i send you this email because you can help in one
or two ways:
1) you can donate money online to help pay for the bail (around 5 thousand
dollars per person!) if you go to:
http://guadalajara.mediosindependientes.org/

2) and the other option, perhaps more important...
is that on friday june 4 is the global day of solidarity... where people
all over the world are going to the mexican consulates of their city
demanding the release of the political prisoners.

actions are being coordinated in new york, boston
( electrodread@hotmail.com), austin ( aaron@calleymedia.org) and chicago
( katrina@calleymedia.org).

please, do one of the two or both...
in terms of going to the consulte it can be as simple as bringing the
people together, maing a banner, and handing the following demands at the
consulate (sent by our Mexican comrades working on the release of the
prisoners):

WE DEMAND:

FIRST- The immediate release of every prisoner and the halt of any legal
procedure against them.

SECOND- That the authorities present a truthful account with all the names
of the prisoners.

THIRD- The immediate end of all actions of intimidation that have been
carried out against the prisoners, their families, and those who have
already been released.

FOURTH- We demand that the physical integrity of all the prisoners is
guaranteed and the immediate end of any type of torture that has been
carried out against them.

FIFTH-The organizations hereby present, as well as the families of the
prisoners, put direct responsibility on the President of the United States
of Mexico, Vicente Fox Quesada and the Governor of Jalisco, Francisco
Ramírez Acuña, in terms of the physical integrity of the prisoners and
families as part of a general repressive strategy used by the government
apparatus.

SIXTH- That the participation of the defense lawyers is permitted.

Let's keep in mind that this are the comrades who are ready to take the
strets if there is a coup in Venezuela...
solidarity works both ways... so please let's show our support this time.

This is precisely the power of networking... and the more actions we are
able to coordinate the more experience we get. So this is also training.
At any rate, thanks for reading and please forward this email...
in solidarity with the peoples of this world who resist!
