THE VILLAGE VOICE Covers The 9/11 Truth Movement

Jarrett Murphy, 21.02.2006 23:12

Everyone has a September 11 tale about how we watched the events in "disbelief." But some people really didn't believe, and in the immediate aftermath of the attacks their doubts took form on the Internet on sites like serendipity.li, plaguepuppy.net, and Killtown. "They were a group of conditioned conspiracy theorists who have been around since JFK and before," says Steve Ferdman, now a 22-year-old marketing major at the New York Institute of Technology, who joined the Truth movement well after the attacks. "They knew how to get the ball rolling immediately. The moment it happened, the conspiracy theories were flying."

Didn't recognize you without your jumpsuit Many of the 250 detainees released (without any clarification of their detention) have confirmed these statistics (some in a new film, The Road to Guantanamo). Still, the US government and military remained doggedly insistent that the detention is legal.

On December 3, 1984 the world's worst industrial disaster attacked the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. Twenty-one years later, the death toll has risen to more than twenty thousand, with thirty people still dying every month due to exposure-related illnesses and more than 150,000 living with them. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001, purchasing its assets as well as its liabilities. Dow set aside $2.2 billion to pay off former Union Carbide asbestos workers in United States but refuses to pay the liabilities in India.

"Accuracy in Media" Validates Georing's Axiom

Walter C. Uhler, 20.02.2006 15:28

Why, of course, the people don't want war...But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship

[Democratic] voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." --- Hermann Goering

Complete liberty of contradiction and disproving our opinion is the very condition which justifies us in assuming its truth for purposes of action; and on no other terms can a being with human faculties have any rational assurance of being right --- John Stuart Mill (from, On Liberty)

Police Brutality Strikes Filipino Youth in Jersey City

Anakbayan-NY/NJ, 20.02.2006 08:28

Jersey City, NJ-- Filipino groups are outraged over what many are calling "a blatant act of police brutality, racial discrimination, and anti-immigrant sentiment" on the part of two Jersey City police officers who arrested and detained a young Filipino who was about to file a complaint against an erring cab driver.

Alan James Alda, 25, a Jersey City warehouse worker originally from Manila, was startled when police suddenly "arrested and threw him into a detention cell" at approximately 3 am on Saturday after he asked for the names of the two police officers who rudely dismissed his complaint against cab driver for overcharging fare.

The two police officers were later identified as Sgt. Dennis Halleran and Officer A. Nunez of the Jersey City Police Department.

I’m not sure how many of us would like to spend two decades more than we do now with tubes at either end of our digestive tracts, but it is true, that in the “developed” world, people have begun to live longer and die later. Tuljapurkar predicts that by 2050, 85 will be the new 65. According to him, rapid advances in medicine and healthcare in the West will gradually prod life expectancy rates up, dramatically impacting the way systems of taxation and models of investment and debt are structured.

Social policy as a throwaway campaign — or: Europe Needs "Structural Reforms"

GegenStandpunkt, 19.02.2006 19:55

Social policy as a throwaway campaign — or:
There must be an end to the troubles state and capital are having with their national sites
Europe Needs “Structural Reforms”

[translated from GegenStandpunkt: Politische Vierteljahreszeitschrift 3-03, Gegenstandpunkt Verlag, Munich]

At least as far as the domestic agenda is concerned, the program for good governance has been settled all over Europe. All the nations that have become rich and important through their market economy, and want to remain so, need reforms. The necessity of these reforms is beyond doubt. The respective government leaders, otherwise committed to conserving their community in the face of disturbing changes, have themselves let it be known that there can be “no alternative” to the “trenchant,” “fundamental,” “extensive,” “permanent,” et cetera, reforms that they are planning. A state of emergency has come to the fore: the state’s budget is ailing, “the economy” is stagnating, and Europe’s important sites for capital investment aren’t what they used to be. All this demands state decrees that do away with disastrous hindrances to the nation’s business life. The damage done to the public good, which — as national budget, economic growth, and success in global competition — is supposed to be guaranteed by proper governmental action, has been found to be the undoubted result of expenses ponied up for the livelihood of people who either work, or else do not carry out this service due to their established uselessness.
