Sadr is now the leader of Iraq.

jamie, 18.08.2004 18:09

8/18/04

As of this writing, Sadr has agreed to leave the Najaf mosque. But as events and the article below demonstrate, he has far more support in Iraq and the Arab world than any “thug agent “ of the illegal occupation. Yes illegal. This is a fact that mainstream media does not bother to remind us of. But the whole world knows and will not forget until long after the invading dupes have long left the sands of Iraq. Already 950 American soldiers have died. How many more will be sacrificed for the rich?

The Last of the Apes?

Samir Nazareth, 18.08.2004 09:31

Why is it that when the evolution of man is picturised, humans are the ultimate in the process of evolutionary refinement? Why does the picture begin with an ape on four feet and end with a man on two, standing tall, erect and proud?

War as daily diet for the masses

Samir Nazareth, 18.08.2004 09:23

Violence, disaster and death have become selling points for the media. Samir Nazareth explores the media’s love for stories that reek of gore and the viewers’ apathy. Grief, destruction, riots, death have become banal. Our threshold to accepting such tragedies has increased because it is brought to us daily from distant lands. Even though faraway tragedies are brought to our sitting rooms and are made personal, it has come to a point were we do not react to it and don’t even feel the need to do nothing.

BUSH PLAN TO "SHRINK" USA IS OPPOSED; Resistance to plan to screen entire population for mental illness

MindFreedom.org, 18.08.2004 03:14

President Bush announced that every man, woman
and child in the USA will be screened for
"mental illness" in a plan that was created by the
psychiatric drug industry, said the internationally
prestigious _British Medical Journal_.

MindFreedom International, a coalition of 100 groups
working for human rights in mental health, opposes
the Bush plan. They ask that President Bush be screened
first. The famous physician Patch Adams says, "I'll
screen him for free. He needs a lot of help."

NYT : "The knock on the door from government investigators asking about political activities is the stuff of totalitarian regimes."

NYT Editor, 17.08.2004 19:27

The F.B.I.'s questioning of protesters is part of a larger campaign against political dissent that has increased sharply since the start of the war on terror.

At the Democratic convention, protesters were sent to a depressing barbed-wire camp under the subway tracks. And at a recent Bush-Cheney campaign event, audience members were required to sign a pledge to support President Bush before they were admitted.

Do the neocon imperialists have something in mind?

jamie, 17.08.2004 17:31

The death count of U.S. GI’s in Iraq is at 944. The Iraqi people have expressed themselves quite clearly all across that nation. They want the U.S. military the hell out of their country. But our leadership is determined to send more underprivileged working class young men and women off to fight, kill and die, for the expansion and maintenance of their “way of life.” Have they not gotten the message? How many more must die? Do the neocon imperialists have something in mind other than “spreading democracy?” Are they directing this madness for the benefit of us all or just other rich folks like themselves. These are important questions for all Americans to ask now.

Welcome to NYC: an Open Letter

Basement Cluster, 17.08.2004 15:47

DEAR MASS MOBILIZATION ACTIVISTS:
Welcome to New York City and the Republican National Convention protests.
This letter comes out of organizing efforts in NYC to make opposition to
the Republican National Convention (RNC) a lasting success. In planning
your protests we think it’s important that you have a general lay of the
land. We tried to address issues of repression, police, prisons, and the
media, as well as some ideas about the way New York is set up
geographically.
We hope you find this useful for planning your protests of the RNC.

Edward Ludwig, CEO, President and Chairman of Becton Dickinson Retractable syringes are a chilling reminder that if we are serious about addressing the HIV pandemic we cannot rely on the corporate stooges that we call “democratic” governments. It is time we took action ourselves and I don’t mean forming another committee to discuss the “issues”. Corporations now dictate policy to our docile “leaders”.

The real cause of the global HIV pandemic is corporate domination.

If our elected representatives will not show leadership, we must show leadership ourselves.

Finnish society is ruled by professors, who believe a race dogma

us should not even have the priviledge to live. Not at least if the
decision were made by /17/academically educated people.

CFL ALERT: PALESTINIAN POLITICAL PRISONERS GO ON HUNGER STRIKE TO DEMAND BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS. ASK YOUR REPS TO PRESSURE THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT INTO CONFORMING TO INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS OF BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.

"The Situation Here": Palestinians Discuss the PA, Reform, and Reviving the Resistance

Serene, Faid, and Suha, 17.08.2004 03:14

In June of this year, a Palestinian who had returned home for the summer sent out an email message to a number of friends and activists in the hopes of conveying her frustration with "the situation here" in Palestine. Two other Palestinians responded to some of the issues she had raised. The back and forth between the three resulted in a very raw and dynamic conversation which captured in a very cogent way what many Palestinians living under occupation are struggling with at the moment. In many ways, it predicted and gives insight into what was behind the mini-revolt against Arafat and the Palestinian Authority which erupted in the Gaza strip in July. For a more in depth understanding of this revolt, see Lamis Andoni's All for Reform and Arafat's Last Stand at http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2004/701/re52.htm and http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2004/700/re3.htm

The Left's Rotten Rallying Cry of Retreat: Cowardice is Not a Strategy

M. Junaid Alam, 17.08.2004 01:09

The ABB message is perfectly clear: in today's internationalized Stalingrad that is the 'war on terror', Palestinians can continue getting mowed down protesting the walls that imprison them, Iraqis can continue getting slaughtered in their own cemeteries fighting a foreign invasion, but we - ensconced in our placid, secure, luxurious lives - simply have "no option" but to vote for war and occupation conducted by Kerry as opposed to war and occupation conducted by Bush, because our problem is far more urgent than colonialism: Bush's "uncouthness" and inability to properly pronounce "adjectival clauses." That victims of American-made bullets and bombs will be able to appreciate these most noteworthy differences is doubtful.
