202 South Broadway Ave. Suite 100 Urbana, IL 61803**Note for those residing in the u.s.: The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a federally recognized non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable and educational organization (EIN: 37-1403593). All donations made to the UCIMC are deductible as allowed by law. Background:
Web hosting for the main Indymedia server was generously donated to the IMC pro-bono for over 2 years. Named after Free Software Foundation and GNU.org Project founder Richard Stallman, the server hosted the global www.indymedia.org site and other major IMC sites, as well as providing a space for emerging IMCs. However, the hosting provider informed the IMC in November 2003 that they could no longer offer this substantial donation, and we had to find a solution quickly.
The IMC-Tech working group has been working to try and decentralize the number of IMC sites on one server for years, but coordinating the various local IMCs and necessary tech folks while maintaining regular system administration proved challenging. Techs and other IMC folks are working hard to both secure new hosting arrangements, and help spread out the location of various sites so that such a crisis can be prevented in the future. In addition, this will lower the amount of bandwidth and other resources required for any one server.
We are asking anyone who can to make a donation of $5. With a positive response from the large numbers of Indymedia organizers, contributors, readers and sympathizers, we hope to raise the funds necessary to cover the various expenses. If you have more resources, we encourage you to donate whatever you can: $25, $50, $100, $500, $10,000...
In particular, your donations are needed for the following:
