Budapest Riots and Autonomous Reactions

25.09.2006 01:05

The Context

It's 24th September 2006, Sunday. In the last seven days Hungary has seen the greatest political chaos since the change of system in 1989. The general reason is the failure of representative democracy, while the particular reason is the leek of a tape. The context is that during the last few terms the party-in-power (Hungarian Socialist Party) was forging reports on the economic status of the country in hopes of being re-elected. The strategy was successful: the HSP was the first party to be re-elected since the beginning of the multi-party democracy. Observers noted that all parties were caught in a "torrent of lies", where every side tried to promise a better and even better world to their voters. Also, there was not much choice for the people: since 1989 they have tried every single possible party to be government party, and banished all the parties after a single term because they did not live up to their expectations. Even the general population began to see that there is not much difference between the parties. ...

11th September 2001, Five Years On

15.09.2006 00:02

Five years after 9/11, a large number of protests, screenings, concerts and meetings were held across the US [ New York: 1 | 2 ; SF Bay Area: 1 | 2 ; Los Angeles: 1 | 2 ] to demand the truth about the events of September 11th 2001, the subsequent "War on Terror" and the imperial invasion of key countries in the oil-rich Middle East. In the UK over 100 truth protestors gathered outside the US Embasy in London to oppose the official conspiracy theory [ photos: 1 | 2 ].

The attacks of September 11th 2001 have been used, on both sides of the Atlantic, to justify a spectrum of attacks on civil liberties and illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The 9/11 Truth Movement fears that, until the lies are exposed, the attack will continue to be used to justify perpetual war and further attacks on dissent and freedom. Post-9/11, steps down the road to a police state in the UK have included terror raids, shoot to kill, detention without trial, torture training, profiling, rendition and a host of other Orwellian "Big Brother" proposals like ID cards.

The 9/11 Truth Movement has received varied responses from Indymedia, ranging from feature articles condemning conspiracy theorists (NYC) to dedicated 9/11 topics and feature articles asking why the network is ignoring the call for a 9.11 investigation (Portland). In the months following the attack UK-IMC carried many articles questioning the official story and analysing what the attacks would mean for the anti-capitalist left (for example: 9/11: A Desperate Provocation By U.S. Capitalism), but in the years following the attack an ad-hoc policy of hiding all articles questioning 9/11 was adopted. This has now changed: the 9/11 Truth Movement is gradually gaining recognition as a legitimate, albeit still controversial, part of the broad global justice movement.

Korean struggle delegation takes the fight against US-Korea FTA to Seattle

schock, 07.09.2006 03:12

The empire-building Bush crew and the neoliberal administration of S. Korea's Roh Moo-Hyun are meeting in Seattle from Sept 6-9th to negotiate a new Free Trade Agreement (the US-Korea FTA) that would create the largest new trade pact since NAFTA. The deal would have serious negative impacts on Korean farmers and workers, environmental regulations, and social services of all kinds. Access to generic medicines would be undermined by the enforced adoption of US style intellectual monopoly rights. In addition, Hollywood lobbyists have inserted special clauses to attack the Korean screenquota system that has helped to foster a strong Korean film sector. A delegation of Korean farmers and workers organized by the KCTU has begun protests this week in Seattle alongside US labor, fair trade activists, and others. The Korean struggle delegation is using the symbolically powerful 3 step - 1 bow march style ... and there are rumors that AFL-CIO may support civil disobedience (!) 500 Supermarket Supply Chain workers locked out across Aotearoa

Aotearoa IMC, 06.09.2006 08:13

Multinational corporations in collusion with the 'Labour' government are waging vicious class warfare on workers in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The last month has seen an escalation of workers struggle against anti-union and pro-corporate policies that threaten our jobs, communities and environment. 500 workers at Distribution Centres of Progressive supermarkets went on strike on Friday 25th Aug because they demand one collective agreement for all four Distribition Centre and a pay increase. The workers were then locked-out by their employer and have not yet been back to work!

Three of the distribution centres are shut down with no trucks arriving or leaving. Four trucks were able to depart in Palmerston North this morning. Some workers quit the union there to go back to work because they have to feed their families and pay the bills.

Cyprus: No Troops to Lebanon

Cyprus Indymedia, 24.08.2006 16:04

Imc-cyprus at lists.indymedia.org

We collectively endorse the political analysis, the positions and concerns expressed in the following article regarding the involvement of Cyprus in the Lebanon crisis. We say No Troops to Lebanon.

Editorial Collective ~ Cyprus Indymedia ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's no longer mere speculation - it is almost certain, or at least there is a strong public impression that the troops to "pacify" Lebanon will transit through Cyprus.

The Government has already sent invitations internationally, formally now a kneeling supplicant hoping to be "taken into consideration" by the international forces that wield the might and the authority to step their boots onto whomever they please. There goes "little miss Cyprus" licking around for influence, wanting to be seen, to be noticed. "Oh, what a good girl. How co-operative".

Protest Lafayette's gold mine in the Philippines

14.08.2006 08:17

Greenpeace activists unfurl a banner

The conclusion of Lafayette’s 30-day mock test run signals the dawn of an impending oceans catastrophe. The gold mine has already leaked cyanide and other toxics into the oceans, creating fish kills and the local people now fear what will happen to their marine environment which for many of them is their only means of survival. Locals are protesting and calling for  international solidarity.

Bomb Number Five, Salaam

Cyprus IndyMedia, 10.08.2006 09:15

Two bodies aflame, after Israeli bombings in Lebanon

by Raida Hatoum, and Cyprus IndyMedia

I've lost count of the Days. And the Bombs. And the Dead

Beirut, first weekend of August

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry for not being able to respond earlier to your letters. I was hoping that you won't be worried, and that you would think about the electricity and internet problems as potential reasons for the delay.

Because of the Israeli siege the authorities are increasing the outages and rationing our electricity so it can last for the coming 15 days. As you might know, we were supposed to receive gasoline and fuel but of course Israel changed its mind and the ships carrying the fuel are now waiting in Cyprus.

And I am very grateful for your amazing efforts and courage and the work you are carrying out, all this you are doing, and your words and love are encouraging me really to survive - thus I wrote today to you despite my tiredness of writing about the war... the injured children, the sick and scared displaced children…the massacres of yesterday. And the new ones today…

The 61st Hiroshima Day

IMC WWW Features, 06.08.2006 09:25

Remember Hiroshima

61 years ago on 6th August 1945 the first nuclear bomb, "Little Boy", a uranium bomb, was dropped on a civilian target, the city of Hiroshima in Japan, 3 days later on 9th August "Fat Man", a plutonium bomb, was dropped on the city of Nagasaki. These Americian acts of genocide, which killed as many as 210,000 people, were unnecessary and were designed "to kick-start the Cold War rather than end the Second World War".

Protests against nuclear weapons are expected to take place around the world, 80 protests have been organised across the USA: To mark the 61st anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, rallies, vigils, teach-ins, and nonviolent protests will be held in more than 60 cities in 24 states across the country to demand an end to nuclear weapons and wars. Antiwar, nuclear abolition and indigenous rights groups are focusing on facilities run by the Bechtel Corporation, one of the world's leading nuclear weapons contractors, war profiteers, and violators of indigenous rights. Activities will take place under the banner: From Hiroshima to Yucca Mountain to the Middle East: No Nukes! No Wars! End War Profiteering! Support Indigenous Rights!

Protests are also expected in Perth and across Europe.

CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) in the UK have shown that 59% opposes the replacement of Trident, Britian's submarine-launched nuclear ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missiles) system. On Friday 5th August protestors handed in 53,000 signatures on a petition to 10 Downing Street calling on the government not to replace Trident or develop any new nuclear weapons system. On Tuesday 2nd August two peace activists were arrested after painting "Trident is Terrorism" outside Faslane naval base. In October Faslane 365 begins — a year-long continuous peaceful blockade at Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons submarine base.

The threat of thermonuclear genocide is now worse than it has been for many years — Bush's war plan includes use of nuclear weapons, Michel Chossudovsky argues that the US plans to use nuclear weapons against Iran and according to Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed UK Government sources have confirmed that war with Iran is on. Plans to nuke Iran are totally insane however this might not prevent it happening because "our 'leaders'... are are psychopaths" and war criminalsJohn Kampfner has reported that At a Downing Street reception not long ago, a guest had the temerity to ask Tony Blair: "How do you sleep at night, knowing that you've been responsible for the deaths of 100,000 Iraqis?" The Prime Minister is said to have retorted: "I think you'll find it's closer to 50,000."

Ardeshir Mehrdad has pointed out that "The struggles of the Iranian people and the peoples of the Middle East against Imperialism and reactionary forces are a struggle that will directly influence the destiny of humanity on our planet. In this battle we will either witness the burial of the architects of the New World order of slavery, and their twin allies in the backward religious movements, or the world will succumb to violence and barbarism. There will be few places left in the world that can remain immune to events in the Middle East."

The Doomsday Clock is ticking away, it has read 7 minutes to midnight since 2002, it is now, perhaps, much closer to midnight...

DIY against the state

a participant among others, 31.07.2006 20:04

DIY against police state

From July 26th to July 30th, an intergalactic festival of squatters, anarchists & miscellaneous activists took place in Freiburg im Beisgau, South Germany: "DIY against the state". It was meant to allow hundreds of participants to meet & share, putting forward the ideas of autonomous living, anticapitalist & anti-authoritatian struggles, through "do it yourself" practice. Tens of workshops, discussions, video-screenings and skill-shares were planned, together with actions & parties, throughout various alternatives venues in the city, like the KTS radical-left social centre, the Schattenparker wagenplatz, or the Susi housing co-op.

While the event started well, with some 300 international participants setting up a self-managed camp on a squatted piece of land, the police was quick to react and sabotage the initiative, in a series of provocations and repressive actions, starting with the arrest of a participant in front of the KTS while a concert was going on, continuing with the eviction of the whole camping site by some 500 riot cops the next day (photos [1|2]), culminating in the total lock-up of the city centre & on Saturday, where the police chased demonstrators trough the streets, made hundreds of identifications, some 60 arrests, injured 7 people, and charged 3 demonstrators with made-up accusations, to prevent a Reclaim The Streets action from happening.

Authorities have clearly tried to dismantle an autonomous initiative, not only by intimidating its participants, but also by destroying its structures, and criminalizing it as a whole. It should be noted that the city of Freiburg is well known for being the most "left-wing" city in Germany, with the Green Party running the council. Last days have made it clear, for those who were still doubting it, that supposedly "alternative" institutional politics can very well cope with the most blatant repression, and turn a city into a police state to ban the right to protest & to self-determination, as soon as authorities' (lack of) control is at stake. Nevertheless, this seems to proove organizors' point - when the state tries to crush DIY initiatives, is there any solution but to organise and... DIY against the state?

Worldwide Protests Against Israeli Aggression

24.07.2006 18:02

Tens of thousands throughout the world took to the street on Saturday, July 22nd, to protest against the ongoing Israeli war on Lebanon and Palestine. For the past 12 days and nights, Israeli air forces have destroyed countless civilian buildings and means of transportation in operations that have killed more than 400 people, mostly civilians, and wrecked havoc on Lebanese cities, harbours, airports and other infrastructure, leading to the displacement of more than half a million people. The International Day of Action had been called by various anti-war and solidarity campaigns.

In Israel itself, at least 5,000 Jewish and Arab peace activists marched in Tel Aviv against Israel's war crimes. Israeli police arrest 3 anti-war protesters [Israeli bombardment of Lebanon violates humanitarian law].

In Chicago, US, some 3,000 people from the Muslim, Arab and progressive community took part in one of the city's largest protests against Israeli aggression since the beginning of the Second Intifada.

In the UK, up to 30,000 marched through central London. Similar, but smaller, demonstrations took place in other cities up and down the country, including Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Other Erupoean cities also saw some big protests: Paris, Amsterdam, Bremen, Warsaw and others. Some 10,000 people had demonstrated in Madrid on July 20th, and so had people in Rome, Athens, Stockholm and Canada [report].

In Australia, thousands of people turned out at rallies in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, while a gathering in Perth was cancelled by the police.
