4th Anniversary to Hague Ruling: Repression and Resistance Intensify

13.07.2008 08:14

Four years after the International Court of Justice published an advisory ruling against Israel's Apartheid Wall, without a change on the ground, the Palestinian popular resistance intensifies in actions, courtrooms, and prisons.

In Bilin, Ramallah area, Israeli settlers and army expand illegal settlement on Bilin's land, in contempt of a ruling by Israel's High Court from more than a year ago, leaving Bilin residents to commence legal proceedings against profiting Canadian companies. Like other areas, Bilin has also seen an upsurge in army violence during weekly demonstrations aimed at the fence, a month ago Ibrahim Burnat was shot by three live bullets in the thigh, and is still in hospital.

Nilin village, neighboring Bilin, has been holding nearly daily demonstrations for several weeks and this week faced a full on siege (video) by Israel's army. Curfew and closure were imposed Friday to Tuesday by Israeli soldiers in an attempt to stop protests against annexation of the village's lands under the illegal excuse of needing to wall off a settler-only apartheid road that runs through the village deep in the West Bank. On Monday (video) and Tuesday (video) demonstrators broke the siege, then continued with demonstrations marking 4 years to the Hague ICJ ruling Wednesday and Thursday (video). Demonstrations are also being held in several other villages and towns, including: Dier Al Ghson in Tulkarem, Azzoun Atmeh and Jayyus in Qalqiliya, Beit Hanina in Jerusalem, Beit Iba in Nablus, and Al-Masara, Umm Salamuna, and Al-Khader in Bethlehem.

Among those spending these days in prison for participation in resistance is a Palestinian organizer from Beit Omar, Mousa Abu Maria, in administrative detention since April 11th. Demonstrations will continue tomorrow as well.

J12: International call for solidarity actions against G8 repression

11.07.2008 14:35

Free the arrestees! Protest against police state and capitalist summit! Take simultaneous actions on Saturday 12th July (en) (日本語)

Three of our friends were unjustly arrested at the demonstration against the G8 summit on 5th July 2008. One of the arrested (vid,ja) is an indymedia activist who is organizing sound actions and a member of the G8 Media Network. The police used overwhelming violence. For instance, they stopped the sound truck forcefully, three [1] [2] [3] policemen broke the truck window with their clubs, (vid,ja) and they viciously dragged out the driver. This situation was exposed as Japanese police brutality once again, reported by independent media.

While most of the Japanese media coverage focussed on the summit, a homeless activist in Osaka was quietly, unfairly arrested on the 4th. Allegedly, his mobile phone ownership and user had different names. Even though his group from Osaka had planned to come and join the poverty and labour unit of the counter G8 Action Network, they cannot because they must rescue him, just after the liberation of another activist who was also arrested for a tiny bureaucratic mistake last month. All of these bureaucratic errors are unreasonably trivial things. This is obviously suppression of dissent.

We denounce the repression at the 5th July sound demonstration and of the homeless activists (ja) by the police, and demand immediate release of all. On 12th July, simultaneous protest actions will be taken at 3pm (GMT+9) in Sapporo, Tokyo, Osaka, etc. against police capitalism. We appeal for international solidarity! Take action simultaneously! Protest against unjust arrests, police violence and the capitalist summit.

July5th Relief Association for Sapporo Sound Demonstration (ja) (j5solidarity (at) riseup.net), in solidarity with Indymedia Japan.

Repression against animal rights activists - 'touch one, touch all'

10.06.2008 09:30

Repression in Austria At around 7:00 am on May 21, 2008, members of the Austrian elite police force (WEGA) stormed several apartments across the country. Some of the residents were woken up in their beds at gunpoint. A total of twenty-three (23) apartments, houses and offices were searches in Vienna, Lower Austria, Styria and Tirol. In many of the apartments the WEGA kicked in the doors. The officers stormed the apartments like in bad Hollywood movies. Only after the residents had been intimidated, "secured" on the wall and/or put in handcuffs did the police start the searches.

All the arrestees are active in the animal rights movement in Austria. The offices of at least 4 animal rights group were search by police. The 10 people, a few of which are currently on hunger strike, are still in custody. On a bail hearing on June 6th, the judge decided to keep them in jail for at least 4 weeks further.

There have been solidarity demonstrations in Austria and around the world to demand the immediate release of the activists and for the authorities to drop the charges (see list of protests below).

May Day 2008 Parades

06.05.2008 20:27

mayday parade 08 Since 2001, Euro May Day Parades on the 1st of May have spread all around Europe.

The May Day Parade is a transnational march which expresses the common will to fight the precarity of work and the criminalization of migrants, to make the daily struggles of the precarious visible. Every year hundred thousands of people protest against the precarity of work and life in a context where worktime can be expanded with no limits, and where migrant workers are the most precarious of all workers. This year, the EuroMayDay network called for a joined parade in Aachen, where, on the same day, French president Nicolas Sarkozy and German chancellor Angela Merkel received the Charlemagne prize. Referring to Charlemagne as the founder of Western culture, it honours people for their contribution to European unificaton. In Hamburg, one thousand nazis tried to recuperate the MayDay, ten thousands antifa met there and cancelled the nazi demo in the most violent riots in Hamburg since 80's. In Milano, there was 100.000 people in the euromayday parade [ video ].

In US, tens of thousands marched and held demonstrations on Thursday 1st of may, calling for an end to war and dignity for immigrants and workers. Dockworkers on the west coast defied their union bosses and staged a one day strike against the war, effectively shutting down all port activity [ pics ]. High school and university students staged walkouts in Venice and San Francisco. Protesters also called out unjust military recruiting and defended public housing.

In New-Zealand, near Blenheim, ploughshares penetrate Waihopai base and deflate satellite dome.

MayDay Parades and Immigrant marches were held all around the world:

Decentralized Days of Action for Squats and Autonomous Spaces

11.04.2008 21:55

Activists across Europe and beyond have dubbed Friday 11th and Saturday 12th April 2008 as days of action for squats and autonomous spaces. Following a meeting in the autonomous space 'Les Tanneries' in Dijon last year, there was a call out for two days of decentralised actions in defence of free spaces and for an anti-capitalist popular culture.

The aim of the days of action is to develop interconnections and solidarity between squats and autonomous spaces and help create more visibility for them as a european/global political movement. Public actions are planned in the Austria, Belarusia, Czech Republic, Danmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden and other places.

In Copenhagen things have already kicked off with an advance action in support of creating a new Ungdomshuset 'Youth House' took place with 5000 people taking part in a demo followed by a massive street party. In the UK, new squats have already been opened in Leeds City Centre, Nottingham, and London. Further advaned actions took place in Amsterdam (nl) (pl) (en), Hamburg (de) and Innsbruck (de). One goal for the weekend of action is to "inspire and empower people" who have previously been unfamiliar with squatting. Discussing campaigns and sharing knowledge and skills we can support one another and be empowered ourselves, as well as drawing in new people by creating a vibrant and exciting place to be.

Throughout the weekend there will be independent media coverage of actions, video and radio reports from around Europe.

In the UK, offices were targetted, banners dropped and protests held. In Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, protesters halted work at one of the biggest open-cast coal mines in Europe, with the intention to remain on the site for several days. Read reports: [1] [2].

“[P]eople in Haiti tell us that all of this stuff has an impact. The more people are doing in other counties, even small events like this one, have an impact because the word is starting to get out to people. So any small thing that you can do really helps.” – Margaret Prescod of "Sojourner Truth" Radio

On Saturday, March 1st, as part of the International Day of Action in Solidarity with the People of Haiti, the www.globalwomenstrike.net hosted a showing of the films Haiti: Harvest of Hope (see the trailer here) and What’s Going on in Haiti? at the Eastside Café in Los Angeles. Margaret Prescod of Pacifica Radio and Women of Color in the Global Women’s Strike, moderated the event. "The Reports that I’ve gotten are is that things are going very well, there were events in about 36 cities around the world,” she said. “There were four major events in Haiti yesterday, including in Port au Prince, that were quite large, including a contingent of people who were also demanding the safe return of Lovinsky Pierre-Antione, one of our comrades who’s been missing in Haiti” (see: http://la.indymedia.org/news/2007/11/210199.php).
