Tens of thousands on the streets say down with the regime

www-features, 28.01.2011 22:02

Cairo protesters suffer water cannon during afternoon prayer In a day of anger at the Mubarak regime hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Port Said and in many Egyptian towns and cities in one of the biggest protests seen so far in the country and with intense confrontations with state security forces. Major protests started on January 25. Hundreds were wounded during street battles with the police with fifty three confirmed deaths from Friday's protests.

The protests came after the protests that led to the fall of the Tunisian government and the ousting of Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, driven by poverty, high food prices, autocratic governments, high levels of corruption for many years, and the absence of political freedom.

Uprising in Tunisia: People Power topples Ben Ali regime

16.01.2011 14:37

Demonstration in Tunis January 14

Tunisian President Zine El-Abedine Ben Ali has been overthrown by a people's power uprising that has built momentum over the last 4 weeks, culminating in a large rally and protest on January 14 that was attacked by riot police. Ben Ali attempted major concessions, but they were too little and too late. After 23 years in power, Ben Ali and family fled the country to Saudi Arabia, joining former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin who was also given refuge in this middle eastern state.

Tunisia's constitutional council has now declared elections should be held within 60 days under section 57 of the Tunisian constitution, with the chairman of parliament as acting President. The Tunisian Revolution can inspire the world as people power toppled the dictator but the ruling RCD party remains in power for the moment.

The revolution in Tunisia may have been influenced by Wikileaks through the publication of US diplomatic cables which added to the public perception of the corrupt nature of the Ben Ali regime. You can read What the US state cables on Tunisia said which also provides an indictment of USA, France and other nations that bolstered the corruption and human rights abuses of the Ben Ali regime in Tunisia.

Floods threaten Brisbane, one third of Queensland declared a disaster area

12.01.2011 05:24

Toowoomba Woman rescued from car during flash flooding

Over a third of the Australian state of Queensland has been declared a disaster area with the capital Brisbane on flood alert expected to experience it's worst flooding in living memory. Early report: Brisbane flood, from an island in suburbia There have been 9 flood related deaths since Monday with 60 people missing feared dead. This flood event follows widespead flooding across northern and central Queensland over the christmas holiday period that affected over 200,000 people, closing major highways and airports, closing most of the mines in the state, damaging crops, and causing billions of dollars worth of damage.

Friends of the Earth have warned about heavy metals released in flood waters and a Wiradjuri elder has warned of the risk of groundwater poisoning from gold mine at Lake Cowal if floodwaters breach the open cut mine owned by Canadian company Barrick Gold. The Great Barrier Reef is under threat from toxic pollution from floods according to the WWF.

The question that few people are publicly discussing is to what extent is climate change contributing to this disaster presently unfolding in Australia.

Sea Shepherd intercepta frota baleeira nos mares do sul

The first clashes have occurred between Sea Shepherd volunteer activists and Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean whale sanctuary bordering the Antarctic continent. Dodging and dancing perilously through the ice flows (Watch video), Sea Shepherd activists in small inflatable zodiacs and their larger three vessels harassed the three Japanese harpoon vessels while in pursuit of the Nisshin Maru whaling factory ship in the first days of 2011. For the first time in seven years of campaigning in the southern ocean Sea Shepherd have been able to locate the whaling fleet before whaling was able to begin.

Governments and Corporations Attempt to Repress Wikileaks: Holding Up Mirrors

08.12.2010 17:29

WikiLeaks has struggled to stay online after initiating the slow release of over 250,000 leaked US diplomatic cables on 28th November 2010. The releases, dubbed "Cablegate" have been carried in newspapers around the world. The four-year-old WikiLeaks organistaion has been under constant political attack, especially from the conservative side of politics, whilst it's website has been subjected to a series of sophisticated cyber attacks. Reporters Without Borders condemned this hounding of Wikileaks.

Spokesperson for Wikileaks, Julian Assange, was put on Interpol's most wanted list for detention and extradition to Sweden in relation to two allegations of sexual abuse against him which had previously been dropped. The Swedish prosecutor is described as “overzealous” in the mainstream German weekly, Die Zeit. Assange surrendered his passport to British police and offered sureties of £180,000, but a Westminster Court denied his bail application. (Court protest)

Global resistance in support of Wikileaks and Assange is taking the form of over 1,200 websites mirroring Wikileaks and street protests such as in Australia. The Indymedia Network is hosting one of these Mirrors. Noam Chomsky, Professor Peter Singer and other prominent people in Australia have released an open letter to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard calling for Julian Assange to be given full support as an Australian citizen and urged a statement of Australia’s commitment to freedom of political communication.

In retaliation against corporate censorship action against Wikileaks anonymous hackers working as Operation Payback have taken down a bank website that froze Julian Assange’s defence fund and the Mastercard site was subject to a DDOS attack after wikileaks donations were banned.

US constitutional lawyer Glenn Greenwald said on Democarcy Now that the freedom of the whole internet is now at stake.

The manner of these revelations has been described as "holding a mirror" to the mainstream press and their friends in governments. The governments clearly don't like to see the ugliness of their own depravity, which is ususally hidden from view by the press. Will we allow Wikileaks and Julian Assange to be destroyed for daring to tell the world the truth about wars and the criminal deeds of governments around the world? Or will we support the upholding of mirrors - both technical and journalistic - in the struggle for openness?

On September 29-30, Brussels, the EU capital, will be in the eye of the storm. The No Border camp will already be in full action. It's attracting activists from all over Europe fighting against the detention and persecution of immigrants in Europe and the deportation of Roma people out of France and Italy, which the Vice-President of the Commission has said it reminded her of WWII ethnic cleansing. The Great Recession is leading to the scapegoating of migrants, in order to bolster élites whose legitimacy is fast decreasing.

Fighting Erupts Between Workers, Federal Police and Scabs at the Cananea Mine

18.09.2010 11:47

Miners attacked, 3 seriously injured in latest round of aggression against 3-year strike

Cananea, Sonora - At least three people suffered serious injuries and 26 were arrested when fighting broke out between striking miners and others at the giant Cananea copper mine in the northern Mexican state of Sonora (less than an hour south of the Arizona border). One of the injured, apparently a strikebreaker, was shot in the head but survived, despite initial reports that he had died.

Cananea is the site of a historic 1906 strike that many argue led to the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Since 2008 members of Section 65 of the National Union of Mine and Metal Workers and the Like of the Mexican Republic (SNTMMSRM) have been on strike at the mine.

Oaxaca: Paramilitaries Ambush International Aid Caravan, Two Dead

30.04.2010 21:15

San Juan Copala, Oaxaca - On April 27th at about 2:50pm, people believed to be paramilitaries affiliated with the ruling party of Oaxaca ambushed an international aid caravan en route to San Juan Copala. Two people were killed in the armed attack.

The caravan was carrying food, water, and other basic necessities to San Juan Copala, which has been subject to a paramilitary blockade that has prevented anyone from entering or leaving the community since January. In addition to carrying much-needed supplies, the caravan was meant to accompany teachers who were returning to classes after paramilitaries denied them access to the community nearly five months ago. The caravan included representatives from the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), Section 22 of the teachers union, the Center for Community Support Working Together (CACTUS), Oaxacan Voices Constructing Autonomy and Liberty (VOCAL), two reporters from the Mexican magazine Contralinea, and international observers from Belgium, Finland, Italy, and Germany.

Mothers Protest Family Separation, De-Valuing of Caring Work

02.04.2010 09:30

On Saturday, March 13, mothers and those who depend on them held simultaneous protests in ten cities around the world in honor of the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. Called by the Global Women’s Strike, the events united under the call to “Invest in Caring, Not Killing,” beginning with payment for the first carers: mothers. Marchers also demanded resources for family reunification and protested the mistreatment of undocumented domestic laborers.

In Guyana, coastal women of African, Indian and Mixed descent travelled to the interior to join with their Indigenous sisters demanding clean potable water, electricity, housing, money for carers, protective rape law, and an end to racial and domestic violence. This historic unity was front page news in the national papers.

In India, Tribal and Dalit women from rural Chhattisgard assembled to demand equal rights to land and property; ration cards for mothers below the poverty line; higher pensions for single, widowed and divorced women; and compensation for mothers and children released from bonded labour.

In Los Angeles, about 150 people led by women and Aztec dancers marched to the Department of Children and Family Services to protest children being unjustly taken from their mothers because of racism, poverty and other discrimination. A similar protest was held in Philadelphia — due to heavy rains the group gathered inside the Arch Street United Methodist Church to dialogue and view a preview of the documentary, “DHS: Give Us Back Our Children!” produced in cooperation with the Scribe Video Center Community Visions Project.

Events also took place in Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Turkey and Venezuela, as well as in the Strike headquarters in London.

The Strike began working to revive International Women's Day in 2000. Their webpage explains: "We all know that the survival of the human race depends on the caring work of mothers. Mothers have the longest working day and the lowest incomes. On top of caring we’re expected to work for the lowest pay to feed our families. We get no recognition or support, only blame when things go wrong. And in times of wars or even ‘peace’, mothers are to the most dedicated campaigners for justice for our loved ones – an extension of our caring work."

European Day of Action to Ban Nuclear Weapons

02.03.2010 20:40

2010 is a crucial year for nuclear disarmament. On the military base of Kleine Brogel (Belgium), there are estimated to be around 20 NATO nuclear weapons. Belgian pilotes are trained to use them. If we ever want to get rid of those nuclear weapons, the Belgian government has to take initiatives now. It's now or never. We aren't a part of the negociations, but we can make sure that the illegal nuclear weapon strategy doesn't go on undisturbed.

April 3rd will be a European Day of Action to ban nuclear weapons. Mass actions will take place at every European NATO nuclear weapons base in Germany, The Netherlands, France, Italy, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Belgium.
